SKETCH GALLERY: Laurence Bennett

I’ve never been confident about my drawing skills, and have never developed the discipline that I encourage students of art direction to cultivate: draw every day. Despite lacking the facility I’d like to have developed, sketching remains a necessary and valuable tool.
These days, as prep on successive projects seems to get more precious—and one’s time gets hijacked by a variety of activities that create nothing tangible—it’s a pleasure to turn to the activity of drawing. To work through a problem, to communicate an idea, a goal, a path forward.
Economy and directness of expression seem to work for me. I don’t think of these sketches as finished designs, but a stage in design development. I hope that they elicit thoughts and feelings, and activate the viewer’s imagination about the environment and story.
